Belvedere Riverside Resource Recovery, London

The new Belvedere Riverside Resource Recovery facility came online in mid 2011 and generates enough energy to power 66,000 homes by processing 585,000t of residual waste generated in the region each year. Two-thirds of the waste will come from London and will be transported on the River Thames, keeping over 100,000 heavy goods vehicles off the capital's roads.

Colt was charged with the provision of a ventilation and smoke control system for the new waste to energy power plant being built in the London Borough of Bexley. Colt installed 1500m of roof mounted Labyrinth natural ventilators, the units are 5.5m wide and are self-supporting over their complete widths. Controllable louvres permit weathered ventilation for the plant. The Labyrinth ventilators ensure a safer environment within the building in the event of a fire but also reduce the temperature, thereby helping to create a more comfortable working environment within the building.
