Since our founding in 1931, we have helped to design, manufacture, install and maintain systems for some of the most demanding and sensitive projects, including data centres, healthcare facilities and food and industrial manufacturing sites. We work with specifiers and project teams to design systems which are fully optimised for each building and its specific performance requirements. We then manage the process from manufacture at our specialist UK facilities through to installation, commissioning and long-term maintenance. Working with Colt

Our experienced team are here to support you at every step, ensuring your climate control system meets your specific requirements and is delivered with a well-managed process:

1. Initial briefing

During your initial consultation, we will look to gain a clear understanding of the functional requirements for the climate control system on your project, and the different environments and spaces in which it functions. This may include collecting information around:

  • The building layout and orientation
  • The zoning and intended function of the spaces
  • Any specific performance requirements for the buildings (such as meeting sustainability standards, including BREEAM)
  • Whether the system will also need to provide smoke control

On existing projects, we can also carry out surveys to review how your current system is functioning and how this may be enhanced.

2. Design proposal

Our in-house design team will then use this information to develop a proposed specification for your project. This may include carrying out detailed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling to understand how air will flow within the proposed building and to develop the optimal specification and arrangement of solutions for your project, ensuring both performance and cost efficiency.

3. Manufacture & delivery

Once a design is confirmed, our project managers will oversee the manufacture and delivery of your system. With our turnkey approach to manufacture, we can provide reliable lead times and clearly communicate progress throughout including arranging delivery to site.

4. Installation & commissioning

We offer UK-wide installation via our experienced site engineers who will ensure all systems are installed accurately and correctly and will oversee commissioning. At handover, we will provide a digital package with all relevant information about the products and systems that have been installed, any certifications and how they should be operated and maintained. This clear process ensures the system can be properly operated from day one.

5. Service & maintenance

Our service continues long after the building is complete. We can provide dedicated service contracts to meet any regulatory requirements and ensure that systems remain in good working order throughout the lifespan of the building.

What is climate control?

Climate control systems help to regulate internal conditions within a building. This can include managing factors such as heating, cooling, ventilation, air quality and humidity within a space. A climate-controlled system may include a wide range of products which are connected to advanced control systems and environment monitoring systems, allowing them to automatically adjust to changing conditions.

What types of climate control systems does Colt offer?

We offer four types of climate-controlled systems, which can be tailored to your project:

  • Natural ventilation systems: These systems comprise automatically opening and closing windows, rooflights and vents. Depending on the requirements of the project, their control can range from a simple open/close switch for occupier-led cooling to fully integrated building management systems, which use them to maintain a constant ideal temperature and level of air quality within the space.
  • Mechanical ventilation systems: Often referred to as HVAC systems, these systems use electrically powered fans, typically connected to ductwork, to manage internal conditions within a building. This can include heating, cooling and air quality.
  • Hybrid ventilation systems: As the name suggests, these systems use a combination of natural and mechanical ventilation systems to meet the climate control requirements for a project.
  • Evaporative cooling systems: These systems are designed to pass airflow over water, using the natural process of evaporation to withdraw heat energy from the air. This allows them to provide a much more cost-effective method of cooling a building than conventional air conditioning.
What climate control systems are used in the industrial sector?

Depending on the design of the building and functional parameters such as the preferred operating conditions, industrial climate control systems may feature a range of both natural and mechanical ventilation products. We design all our systems bespoke for each project to provide the most effective climate control solution for your requirements.

What’s the difference between air conditioning and climate control?

The sole purpose of air conditioning systems is to cool air. Climate control systems are more complex and can allow more precise control of a variety of factors which impact comfort, such as:

  • Cooling and heating to maintain temperatures within a set range
  • Dehumidification
  • Air purification
  • Ventilation
