What is mechanical ventilation?

Mechanical ventilation systems use fans or other plant equipment to drive fresh air into a building and push stale air out. These systems can also incorporate cooling technologies, such as air conditioning or evaporative cooling. They provide a solution where natural ventilation is not possible or practicable, either due to the ventilation demand of the building, or external factors such as traffic noise or air pollution.

Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR)

MVHR systems can help to reduce the heating demand for a building, extracting the heat from outgoing stale air and using it to warm incoming fresh air. With our end-to-end approach to design, manufacture and installation, Colt International can help to develop a tailored MVHR which maintains comfortable, well-controlled internal environments whilst lowering overall energy demand.

What is the difference between MVHR and mechanical ventilation?

Mechanical ventilation heat recovery (MVHR) systems are a type of mechanical ventilation system that incorporates a heat exchanger. This exchanger extracts heat from outgoing stale air and uses it to warm incoming fresh air. This can help to reduce demand on heating systems, particularly during the winter months.

What building regulations cover mechanical ventilation?

The Building Regulations regarding ventilation and air quality are primarily contained in Approved Document F to the Building Regulations (England and Wales) and Section 3 – Environment (Scotland). As these systems can also contribute a significant proportion of overall energy demand and operational carbon emissions, they should also be considered in relation to the energy performance requirements contained in Approved Document L (England and Wales) and Section 6 – Energy (Scotland).

What is the difference between mechanical ventilation and natural ventilation?

As their name suggests, mechanical ventilation systems rely on powered components to provide ventilation and, in some cases, cooling for a building. Natural ventilation systems harness natural forces such as wind and the buoyancy of air to maintain comfort and manage internal air quality.
