Southmead Hospital, Bristol
Southmead Hospital is expected to be the most sustainable hospital in the UK.
SECTOR: Smoke Control, Hospitals
LOCATION: Bristol
Requirements: Maximise natural ventilation and slash the amount of energy required to run the building
Client/End User: North Bristol NHS Trust
Main Contractor: Carillion/Permasteelisa
The new hospital is expected to be the most sustainable major acute hospital in the UK with a carbon footprint well below the UK government’s target.
The hospital’s sustainability strategy is largely based on good use of ventilation, for which Colt UK has designed and installed a number of systems.
The floor plan has been designed to maximise natural ventilation: the high-ceilinged atrium divides the building in two and acts as the building’s circulatory spine. Coltlite and FCO systems natural ventilators slash the amount of energy required to run the building compared to a conventional air conditioning system. Universal Louvres naturally ventilate the plant rooms.
Colt also developed a complete solution with mechanical extraction to provide day to day and smoke ventilation in many areas.
