What is an acoustic louvre?

Acoustic louvres are specially designed to limit the amount of noise transmitted through the louvre whilst still providing effective airflow and weather defence. They are most commonly used around plant rooms, substations and cooling towers where noise transfer from the mechanical equipment to the surrounding environments needs to be limited. 

How does the blade profile affect an acoustic louvre?

We supply our CALM Acoustic Louvre Modules in two blade profiles: straight and chevron. 

The straight blade designs provide a direct path for air to pass through the module, allowing them to deliver excellent aerodynamic efficiency whilst still limiting noise transfer. The chevron or V-shaped blades are designed to lengthen the path that sound waves need to travel to pass through the module and to help deflect them into the absorption material, maximising the noise reduction performance. This means they can deliver enhanced acoustic performance, particularly at mid to high frequencies, whilst maintaining effective airflow.

How is acoustic louvre performance measured?

There are two key measures used to measure the performance of acoustic louvres:

  • Aerodynamic coefficient (Cv): This measures the rate at which air can pass through the unit. A higher Cv value means air can flow more efficiently through the louvre.
  • Weighted sound reduction index (Rw): This measures the unit’s effectiveness at limiting airborne noise based on acoustic testing to BS EN ISO 10140-2:2021. A higher Rw value indicates the unit will limit noise more effectively. Along with the primary Rw value, we also provide two further correction values in brackets: C and Ctr. These adjust the Rw value based on performance with mid-frequency noise (C) and low-frequency noise (Ctr).

Our CALM Acoustic Louvres are suitable for a wide range of applications where sound transfer in or out of a space needs to be limited. They’re most commonly used around areas housing mechanical equipment, such as plant rooms and substations or in sensitive industrial applications where noise transfer needs to be carefully limited to meet planning requirements.

The modular system can be used to create walls, installed in runs in virtually any width or height, and fully integrated with our other louvre options, including units offering additional weather protection. The units can be finished in a wide range of coatings and colour options, including marine-grade finishes for highly corrosive environments. Where active airflow control is required, COLT ventilators can also be fitted behind the CALM modules.
